What a LUT can and cannot hold
A LUT maps each colour to another colour, the same everywhere in the picture. So everything that changes colour and tone goes in, and everything that depends on where a pixel is, or on its neighbours, stays out. The converter lists what it left out for every preset.
- In the LUT
- White balance (as a shift), exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, tone curves, the colour mixer, colour grading and split toning, vibrance, saturation, calibration, black and white, luminance and colour range masks, and creative profiles.
- Not in the LUT
- Clarity, texture, dehaze, sharpening, noise reduction, vignette, grain, lens corrections, crop and geometry, brush, gradient, radial and AI masks, and Point Color.
How close is it?
Adobe does not publish how Lightroom computes its sliders, so the converter is an approximation built from public colour science. It was tuned against Lightroom's own exports of test charts. The median colour difference to Lightroom (ΔE2000, where under 1 is invisible side by side) is under 1.3 for exposure, contrast and blacks, 0.1 to 2.1 for highlights and shadows, and 0.2 to 3 for colour mixer saturation. Lightroom adapts highlights, shadows and whites to each photo, and positive whites differ the most, up to about 7. White balance, curves, colour grading, calibration, black and white and luminance masks have not been measured yet. Colour range masks select colours the way the xMosaique app does, matched to the app's own output to within 0.02, and have not been compared with Lightroom. Lightroom works on the raw file while a LUT grades a finished picture, and the result differs from the xMosaique app's own rendering.
Converter questions
Is the converter free, and are my files uploaded?
It is free, with no account. The conversion runs in your browser, in a part of the page that is not allowed to connect to the internet, so your files never leave your device.
How do I turn a .cube LUT into a Lightroom XMP profile?
Choose the .cube file above, give the profile a name and a group if you like, and download the .xmp. Import it in Lightroom or Camera Raw as a profile. It keeps the LUT exactly, up to 32 nodes, and comes with an Amount slider.
Can I convert a Lightroom preset XMP file to a .cube LUT?
Yes. Choose the preset XMP file and download the .cube, at 33 or 65 nodes. Colour and tone settings go into the LUT. Settings a LUT cannot hold, such as clarity, grain or brush masks, are left out and listed.
Why does the .cube look a little different from Lightroom?
Lightroom's formulas are not public, and some sliders adapt to each photo. The converter is tuned to Lightroom's own exports, and the section above lists how close it is for each setting.
Which files does it accept?
3D .cube LUTs, Lightroom and Camera Raw preset XMP files, and Camera Raw creative profiles. Files over 30 MB, 1D LUTs and .3dl files are not supported.
Can an AI agent use the converter?
Yes. In browsers with WebMCP the page offers two tools, convert_cube_to_xmp and convert_xmp_to_cube, which take a file's text and return the converted file. Without WebMCP, an agent can use the labelled file picker and download links as a person would.
